Accommodation
We stay on board the MS Polarlys. There are unparalleled views from almost
every quarter of this stylish vessel. Here polished brass and wood, sculptures,
carvings and a fine selection of Norwegian contemporary art are found alongside
the comfort of the bars, café, conference rooms and restaurant. This 11,341
tonne ship was built in 1996 and carries 737 passengers in 479 berths. We are
accommodated in en-suite Twin or single outside cabins. Typical breakfasts,
dinners and lunches are served on board.
What We Will Experience
We learn about the culture and life of coastal Norway as we journey along its
fjords towards Kirkenes, an arctic outpost near the Russian border, stopping at
34 picturesque ports along the way. At Kirkenes, the ship turns around and
sails south back towards Bergen,
calling at the same ports, but those visited during the day on the northbound
voyage are visited during the night on the southbound voyage so that we are
guaranteed days filled with majestic scenery, spectacular Norwegian fjords, snow-capped
mountains and an astonishing variety of flora and fauna.
Our ship makes stops (with included field trips as
indicated) at:-
- the beautiful Art Nouveau town of Alesund.
- Geiranger in the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage
site, to see the beautiful Brudesloret, Friaren, and the Seven Sisters
waterfalls. Included is a Geiranger Panorama field trip.
- Molde; for a magnificent view of the Romsdal Alps which made
it a favourite vacation spot of Henrik Ibsen.
- the medieval city of Trondheim,
Norway's first
capital. With its charming streets, peaceful harbour, and old city bridge we
can see the restored wooden buildings in Bakklandet and the great gothic
cathedral of Nidaros, where the new kings of old Norway once received their
official blessing. Included Trondheim
is a visit with Nidaros Cathedral on the northbound journey and a midnight
concert in Tromsø on the southbound journey.
- at the modern town of Bodø
where we can join a Saltstraumen Safari and witness the site of the world's
strongest maelstrom.
- the Lofoten
Islands with their
picturesque fishermen's cabins on stilts and weathered wooden racks with drying
cod.
- Tromsø, the "Paris of the North" where modern
shops and cafes provide a vibrant contrast to the stunning stained glass of the
Arctic Cathedral, whilst the Polar Museum and Polaria centre explore Arctic
life over the centuries. In the 19th century, Russian, British, Dutch, and
German ships called here before heading off on Arctic expeditions or to hunt
whales, walrus and seals. A city tour is included.
- Honningsvåg, the capital of the North Cape - included North
Cape Field Trip.
- Kirkenes, a few kilometres from the Russian border and the
Sami communities of Northern Finland.
- Vardo, the easternmost point of the country.
- Batsfjord, which boasts the remains of a Stone Age
settlement.
- Hammerfest, the world's most northerly town, which, despite
its remote location, was the first Norwegian town to have electric street
lighting and its own power station.
- Rørvik where there is a chance to enjoy the award-winning
maritime museum.
- Torvik, Måløy and Florø.
