Featuring the highlights of Canberra & the Floriade Festival
Canberra was established in 1911 to create a capital for the newly federated country of Australia. Canberra's special contrast of nature and urban living was planned in 1912 by master designer, Walter Burley Griffin, a Chicago architect who won an international competition to design the new capital. The provisional Parliament House was opened in 1927 in what was then a treeless paddock.
Today, Canberra Australia's largest inland city, is a thriving modern city with stylish restaurants, hip bars, boutique shopping and a busy calendar of events and festivals. The city's national museums and attractions hold and share the treasures of the nation.
Since its beginnings in 1988 Floriade has always been held in the heart of the city in Canberra's beautiful Commonwealth Park, on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. The word Floriade comes from the Latin word 'floriat', meaning 'to design with flowers'.
