Peter Burns

Odyssey Travel Program Leader

Scotland has become the second home for Peter Burns.  After completing a work secondment for 12 months as the manager of the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve, Peter has returned several times, leading three Odyssey programs, and visiting the remote glens and villages of his ancestors.  Peter is delighted to be leading the new Scottish Island Hopping program, and sharing his passion for his ancestral home with fellow travellers.

Peter also has a great affinity with India.  His namesake and grandfather, served under the British Raj in India prior to immigrating to Australia.  Having twice backpacked through Northern India in the last 5 years, and led the 2011 Odyssey Indian Ed-venture, Peter looks forward to taking another group to India later in 2012.

Peter has also backpacked through eastern Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia; and he lead the last Caucasian Odyssey which travelled through the former USSR states of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Peter also hosts inbound Odyssey groups from Road Scholar in North America and delights in showing them the Hidden Gems of Tasmania, including Cradle Mountain and the Freycinet Peninsula.

Peter has had an eclectic career, working as a civil engineer, teacher, and environmentalist.  He has also lived and worked on remote Aboriginal communities in central Australia.

Peter combines his love of travel and the natural environment with part-time work with Parks Victoria, where he shares the role of Ranger in Charge of the Great Otway National Park, including the iconic Great Ocean Walk.  He lives in the Otway Ranges, and is actively involved in the local community as a Community Ambulance Officer.
